The World of Aqua : Earthly Origins
Aria takes place in 2301 on Aqua, which was formerly known as Mars. When the planet was terraformed, the process melted the polar ice caps more than expected, flooding 90% of the planet's surface with water. At the time of Aria, Aqua has already been settled for 150 years.
Life on Aqua
The flooding of Mars resulted in the creation of hundreds of small islands. When the first colonists arrived, they were placed on different islands according to their original nationality. Each island still bears the architectural and cultural imprint of its original colonists.
Akari lives in Neo-Venezia, Aqua's main spaceport, where the first ships from Man Home (Earth) landed. Neo-Venezia was also the location of the original planetary government when the planet was originally settled, and is where the colony's first governors lived. Neo-Venezia's architecture is modeled on the Earth city of Venice, which existed until the mid-21st century.
Because of the distance between Man Home and Aqua, and the expense of ferrying cargo between the two planets, Aqua is technologically a hundred years behind Man Home. Many chores, like laundry and cooking, still have to be done manually.
Aqua Facts
The length of an Aqua day is the same as a Man Home day, but its year is twice as long. Thus there are 24 months in an Aqua year.
Although consumer technology on Aqua is relatively primitive by 24th-century Earth's standards, life on Aqua is made possible by a sophisticated web of technology above and below the surface. Aqua's temperate climate is also artificially maintained by "salamanders", who live and work on an atmospheric (suborbital?) "floating island" that is visible from the planet surface. As Mars' gravity is naturally 1/3 of the Earth's, the gravity of Aqua is regulated at 1 Earth G by "gnomes", a group of workers who live underground. |
