Summary
It's near the end of spring on Aqua. Alicia goes out to work, leaving Akari to mind the shop. Akatsuki calls briefly but hangs up after calling Akari "momiko-chan" a few times.XD Then a second call comes in, but only the top of the caller's head is visible. It seems to be a child looking to hire a gondola. Akari explains that she's only a trainee and can't take passengers, and the child hangs up.
Akari goes out with Aria-shachou to practice rowing and finds a little girl lying in the gondola. The little girl asks for a ride, and when Akari protests that she can't take passengers, the girl says it's OK because they're friends. (sound familiar?:) Akari gives in and lets the girl ride in her gondola. Along the way, Akari finds out that the girl's name is Ai, and also recognizes her as the child on the phone. After a while, they meet Aika. Akari convinces her to take Ai in her gondola (by invoking Alicia's name:D), and they all stop for baked potatoes. (again - sound familiar?)
Drama! Aria-shachou (who's been carrying his big food bowl on his headXD) is playing around when he falls into the canal! Luckily he lands in his bowl, but by the time Akari notices, the tide has carried him away!! Akari, Aika and Ai rush to save him, using Akari's famous reverse rowing technique, but the wake of a landing ship sweeps Aria-shachou even further away! But luckily Alicia is rowing nearby and effortlessly rescues Aria-shachou. Since Alicia has passengers she can't stop for longer than it takes to hand Aria-shachou back to Akari, but Ai is mesmerized by Alicia's technique. Akari's party returns to Aria Company.
Back at Aria Company, Ai's parents come to pick her up. Ai says she's looking forward to coming back and riding with Akari again when she's an Undine, and Akari promises to do her best. Ai gives Akari an envelope addressed to Alicia. When Alicia opens it later it's the picture of a young couple with a baby. She remembers the couple as a pair of newlyweds who were her passengers when she was first starting to row solo. She remembers that they were on their first trip together and were arguing, and she's glad to see they became so happy. End!
Episode 2 preview: Akira shows up. It looks like the story from vol 3 where Aika recalls when she first met Alicia.
